This summer I got a short job watching three boys from 7-4:30 every week day for four weeks. They are 5, 7 and 9. Douglas and I were also asked to watch 3 more kids (1.5, 5 and 7) for 3 days while parents took a vacation to Nauvoo and the other kids spent the day with us. He and I stayed at their house and had them 24/24 hours of the day. We have a good time, but I've learned...
1. Children are very, very demanding.
2. You have no rights anymore, as they all belong to the children.
3. Some rights lost include: time alone, sitting, eating what you want, napping, your own agenda, being right, and watching the movie you want to watch.
4. Kids ask and ask and ask for things untill you finally say "Yes" just to add variation to your vocabulary.
5. There's no limit on number of spills available for clean up daily.
6. Spills can include juice, milk, water, crackers, toys, glass, too-hot food straight from the mouth, etc.
7. Don't let slightly potty trained young children laugh too much at the dinner table unless you want another flavor added to your food.
8. They may ask for more to eat, and throw a fit if you don't give it to them, but that doesn't actually mean they won't run from the table to play as soon as you turn your back.
9. Doors always seem to be the opposite of whatever you want them, open or closed.
10. Bath time should really be called a wet screaming contest.
11. Messes appear out of thin air, but the little magicians can't seem to reverse their magic.
It's been a fun summer since I got back from Chile!

a thinking thing

Is a time for thinking, playing, not thinking, growing, remembering, forgetting, getting sun burned, etc. It seems to be a more simple time, even though sometimes the summer is even more complicated. You know, summer romances, vacations (never seem to be relaxing, don't quite know why yet), and those sorts of things. I remember the summer before I turned 15. I, for the first time, felt my age. I felt 14 years old. I don't know what that means, really, but at the time I remember laying in bed one night and thinking about me. And I really felt 14. I dunno, I guess summer does crazy things to your head.
One thing is certain about any season though: it is what you make of it. Books and books and books have been written about that, proving or disproving that statement. People go to counseling and sit and hear that over and over, I'm sure. I know I've said it to friends, and it's been said to me. But I found proof today that it's true. What's more, it comes from the source of ultimate truth: Christ.
Really. Check out Luke 8:4-15. The parable of the sower.

Perhaps my findings are only an interpretation. Definitely, He is talking about how different people accept the word of God. But I would extend this to talk about anything: trials, blessings, all kinds of things. I want to be verse 15 for sure. That last word...
...one day.
